Darren Smith, LMFT
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
My belief is that people can be free from their past and show up in their lives for the first time in a way of their own choosing. Rumi says “The wound is where the light enters you.” I believe therapy is the journey of finding the best in all of us, sometimes out of the tattered brokenness we find ourselves living in. I want therapy to be a journey of compassion, acceptance, laughter, hubris, humility and willingness to self-confront in a way that makes the best in our selves rise to the top. I strive to provide an atmosphere where willingness to tolerate suffering in order to grow is collaborative and at times confrontational with honesty and authenticity.
I practice various ways to support my therapy process. I enjoy Jungian, Positive Psychology, Solution Focused and other engaging types of therapy to provide a broad base to help each client. However, it is important that treatment of trauma requires specific evidence-based modalities such as Trauma Focused CBT, neurological and exposure-based modalities as the most effective. I have had various trainings and certifications in all of these modalities. I enjoy working with individual men and women, with a focus on Men’s work and specifically Couples/Marital and premarital counseling. Couple’s work is a specific focus for me. I believe your primary relationship is the best opportunity for you to be better. Dr. David Schnarch is quoted as saying that “Strong individuals make strong marriages.” I enjoy employing Dr. Murray Bowens Family Systems, as a way of guiding this work.
We are the mirror as well as the face in it.
We are tasting the taste this minute of eternity.
We are pain and what cures pain, both.
We are the sweet cold water and the jar that pours. Rumi
